11th BYK-Gardner User Meeting in Würzburg 2016
The 11th BYK-Gardner User Meeting took place on 5th and 6th of April 2016 in Würzburg.
Approximately 130 customers participated in the User Meeting to share their knowledge in the field of color and appearance control.
The first focus was on appearance measurement. Presentations given by Audi AG, BYK-Gardner GmbH and Frauenhofer Institute showed how appearance is perceived by human beings, how it is realized on different classes of automobiles and how it can be objectively measured by instruments. Additionally, the influence of raw materials like additives, effect pigments and hardeners as well as process parameters (e.g. sanding of primer) was discussed by the companies BYK-Chemie, Covestro Deutschland and ASIS GmbH.
Color control of effect finishes was another main focus of interest. What do we really see? How can optical variable colors be assessed? How does gloss influence the color of effect finishes? These questions were answered in presentations given by BASF Coatings and Mr. Cramer, Consultant.
A harmonious final finish not only depends on a functioning supply chain. It also requires repeatable and reproducible measurement systems. A comparison of different types of spectrophotometers was demonstrated by AkzoNobel and presentations given by Karl Wörwag and Audi AG showed how the BYK-mac i can be used as a reliable tool for process capability studies.
Color difference assessment and tolerancing methods have been continuously developed over the years. New software solutions and color difference methods were introduced by PPG Automotive Coatings and BYK-Gardner. Last but not least the meeting also covered the latest technologies of multi-angle color instruments and how they can be used to improve cycle time in the lectures of Orontec, Office Color Science and Lechler.
It was an excellent exchange of experiences between the customers from all over Europe with highly informative presentations - a great get together of the automobile and paint industry!
After a guided tour through Würzburg city, the evening was concluded with a special joint dinner in the historical Hofkeller.
