Rheology Additives: Increasing film thickness



With rheology additives, greater film thicknesses can be achieved as a result of the thickening of the systems. The viscosity of the finished product is increased and the elastic properties are improved due to the formation of networks. To achieve very high film thicknesses, pseudoplastic rheology additives are preferably used. Thixotropic rheology additives, on the other hand, are primarily suited to optimally adjusting the anti-sagging properties and leveling. Depending on the application, controlled flocculating wetting and dispersing additives or thixotropy enhancers for fumed silica can be used.




BYK Additive Recommendations
BYK-405

Liquid rheology additive for solvent-borne coating systems to reinforce the rheological effectiveness of fumed silica. Facilitates silica incorporation, prevents separation, and increases/stabilizes thixotropic behavior.

BYK-420

Liquid rheology additive for aqueous and water-reducible coating systems for improving antisagging and anti-settling properties. The additive is also especially suited for manufacturing aqueous pigment concentrates. BYK-420 causes thixotropic flow behavior; post-addition is possible.

BYK-425

VOC-free, liquid rheology additive for aqueous dispersion-based systems to improve anti-sagging and to adjust in-can viscosity. The additive is suitable for increasing the grinding viscosity of aqueous pigment pastes.

Liquid rheology additive for solvent-borne and solvent-free medium-polarity systems to improve anti-sagging and anti-settling properties. The additive is particularly suitable for thick layer systems due to its pseudoplastic flow behavior.

BYK-7410 ET

Liquid rheology additive for medium-polarity solvent-borne and solvent-free coating systems as well as PVC plastisols and ambient-curing resin systems. The additive creates highly thixotropic flow behavior and consequently improves the anti-sagging and anti-settling properties. Post-addition is possible.

BYK-7411 ES

Liquid rheology additive for low-polarity solvent-borne and solvent-free coating systems to improve anti-sagging and anti-settling properties. The additive creates highly thixotropic flow behavior. Post-addition is possible.

BYK-7420 ES

Liquid rheology additive for aqueous and water-reducible coating systems for improving anti-sagging and anti-settling properties. The additive is also especially suited for manufacturing aqueous pigment concentrates. BYK-7420 ES creates thixotropic flow behavior. Post-addition is possible.


BYK-R 605

Liquid rheology additive for plastic applications such as vinylester and epoxy resins, unsaturated polyester resins, and gel coats to reinforce the rheological effectiveness of fumed silica. Facilitates silica incorporation, prevents separation, and increases/stabilizes thixotropic behavior.
