100% High Solids Wetting and Dispersing Additive: DISPERBYK®-2155

Conversion to high-solid systems is one means of achieving eco-friendly coating formulations. These systems require additives with high-solid content, however, and such additives also often suffer from poor flowability, in particular if they have a higher molecular weight.

But the wetting and dispersing additive DISPERBYK®-2155 combines both properties: It’s solvent-free (= 100% solids content) and provides good flowability at the same time. This combination of contradictory properties is made possible by the unusual arrangement of the polymer building blocks. In conventional high-molecular-weight additives, the individual components of the polymer are aligned along a linear chain. BYK, however, chose a novel structure for its new wetting and dispersing additive DISPERBYK®-2155: The new additive is highly branched. Thanks to this structure, the additive flows well despite its high molecular weight and requires no additional solvents.

The superiority of DISPERBYK®-2155 over a conventional, high-molecular-weight additive becomes clearly evident in a head-to-head comparison: Pigment grinds with DISPERBYK®-2155 exhibit better flow characteristics and equal or even better pigment stabilization. And this additive stabilizes inorganic pigments just as effectively as it stabilizes the more critical organic pigments and fine-particle-size carbon black pigments.
