Wet Film Thick­ness Gages

The Inter­chem­i­cal Thick­ness Gage has long been the stan­dard for mea­sur­ing wet film thick­ness in the coat­ings indus­try. (U.S. Patent No. 3,128,558).
BYK-Gard­ner offers three basic mod­els in vari­ous ranges. All mod­els have an accu­racy of +/- 0.0001 in (2.5 µm) or 2.5% full scale, whichever is greater.

The gage con­sists of an eccen­tric inner wheel, sup­ported by two larger outer con­cen­tric wheels. At a spe­cific point, the inner wheel touches and picks up wet film when the gage is rolled on the coated sur­face. This crit­i­cal clear­ance may be read on a rotat­ing scale.

Model S – Gen­eral Use

  • For gen­eral use (orig­i­nal Inter­chem­i­cal design)
  • Scale is stamped on the out­side of the metal wheel; no rotat­ing scale is used

Model R * – Rotat­ing Scale

  • For crit­i­cal mea­sure­ments
  • Has a rotat­ing scale to facil­i­tate accu­rate gage read­ing
  • No black plate on the oppo­site side of the wheel is pre­sent

Model L * –
Low Iner­tial with Rotat­ing Scale

  • For very thin coat­ings and accu­rate mea­sure­ments on mov­ing sur­faces
  • Inside is hol­lowed out; very lightweight – only 0.3 lb
  • Black rotat­ing scale to min­i­mize read­ing errors

Gage Holder

The gages may be held between the thumb and forefin­ger to take a read­ing, or it may be inserted into the gage holder. This holder is widely used to mea­sure coat­ings safely on mov­ing sur­faces such as high-speed press rollers. It can also be used on sta­tio­nary, flat, or curved sur­faces since the holder makes it easier to exert a steady, even force on the gage.
