Waterborne coating systems containing inorganic pigments and extenders tend to settle and separate. Commonly used deflocculating additives achieve a perfect stabilization of pigments but the settling tendency normally increases.
 

BYK®-3550: Surface-active additive based on patented macromer technology

Silicone and acrylate additives are typically used in combination in standard coating formulations. Acrylate additives improve the flow and leveling of a coating system while the silicone additives enhance substrate wetting and prevent cratering. ALTANA acquires wax additives business of Clariant

The specialty chemicals Group ALTANA signed a contract to acquire the Dutch manufacturer of wax additives, Dick Peters B.V. The company, which is located in Denekamp, the Netherlands, is a subsidiary of the Swiss specialty chemicals company Clariant. In 2007, Dick Peters B.V. achieved sales of about €24 million.
