BYK, one of the world’s leading suppliers of additives and measuring instruments, is a key sponsor and co-organizer with the Royal Society of Chemistry of the one-day Heterogeneous Catalysts for Sustainable Industry workshop.
As the world shifts towards a greener and more sustainable future, the processes and reagents that the chemical industry has depended upon for years are increasingly under scrutiny. This situation offers BYK new opportunities for doing things better and cleaner while still providing customers with the high quality they are used to.
Such challenges encompass, amongst other things, finding alternatives to traditional homogeneous heavy metal-based catalyst systems, and identifying new methods for processing sustainable feedstocks.
Heterogeneous catalysts already offer significant benefits such as catalyst and product separation, reuse and recyclability. This invites them to become the basis of a new generation of environmentally benign catalysts, and requires us to look to the past and consider redesigning the more traditional zeolite- and clay-based catalysts for the new challenges.
This workshop, a collaboration between industrial- and academically-minded scientists which will take place in London on November 25, 2019, is aimed at providing a platform for new scientists to discover more about heterogeneous catalysts and surface reactivity, and for the more experienced scientists to look at future possibilities.

BYK is one of the world’s leading suppliers in the field of additives and measuring instruments. Additives are chemical substances which, when used in small quantities, improve product properties such as scratch resistance or surface gloss. Manufacturing processes are also optimized by the addition of additives.
The coatings, inks, and plastics industries are among the main consumers of BYK additives. Yet with the production of oil and gas, the manufacture of care products, the production of adhesives and sealants, and construction chemistry, too, BYK additives improve the product characteristics and production processes. Testing and measuring instruments from BYK can effectively evaluate the quality of color, gloss, and appearance as well as the physical properties of paint, plastic, and paper products and are an important part of quality control.
As a globally operating specialty chemicals company, BYK has production sites in Germany (Wesel, Kempen, Moosburg, Schkopau and Geretsried), in the Netherlands (Deventer, Njiverdal and Denekamp), in Great Britain (Widnes), in the US (Wallingford, Chester, Gonzales, Louisville, Earth City and Pompano Beach) and in China (Tongling).
Today the company employs more than 2,300 people worldwide and forms part of the ALTANA Group.
