New SCONA adhesion promoters pave the way for powerful polyolefin composite structures
October 13, 2026 – How well a multi-layer composite is capable of performing is often decided at a virtually imperceptible place: the interface. While polyethylene and polypropylene certainly do offer wide-ranging processing and application opportunities, it is nevertheless difficult to make them adhere to polar materials such as steel, aluminum, or wood. With SCONA TSPE 1013 GALL, SCONA TSPP 4012 GB and SCONA TSPP 5013 GB, BYK Additives is presenting the next generation of adhesion promoters that fill precisely this gap.
The new SCONAs lay the foundation for combining dissimilar material properties intentionally in a single component. Potential areas of use range from pipe coatings and protective coatings for metal packaging to construction, automobile, electronic, and consumer goods applications. The reliable bonding of the individual layers allows the barrier effect, mechanical stability, and surface properties of a variety of materials to be used without the need to compromise on composite adhesion. At the same time, improved long-term durability supports the resource efficiency of the multi-material solution.

A molecular bridge between disparate materials
The additives were developed for thermoplastic multi-material applications. They promote the strong and reliable bonding of polyolefins with metals, wood, or plastics in films and panels, for example, and in other extrusion applications. Their decisive advantage is that the compound is not simply based on a mechanical coupling of the materials. More accurately, a resilient molecular interaction is created at the interface. This improves the adhesive strength and reinforces the long-term durability of the compound as a whole.
SCONA TSPP 4012 GB is based on a chemically modified linear polypropylene copolymer. The product was devised as an adhesion promoter for single and multi-layer PP films on metal and similar polar substrates.
SCONA TSPE 1013 GALL is a chemically modified linear low-density polyethylene. It fulfills the same bridge function in PE-based films and composite systems. Both products are functionalized with maleic anhydride, supplied as granulate, and suited for extruded films, and panels. This enables BYK to offer specially designed adhesion promoters for both PP-based and PE-based composite solutions.
SCONA TSPP 5013 GB is BYK’s solution for the secure bonding of polypropylenes to MDF and chipboard. Powerful adhesion in a wide range of activation processes bears testimony to its immense effectiveness and flexibility in processing.

Adhesion and process stability
In BYK laboratory tests, SCONA TSPP 4012 GB achieved a seal strength of 35 N/15 mm on aluminum. The value measured on steel was more than 45 N/15 mm.
Both in pure form and in a dosage of 30 percent in linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), SCONA TSPE 1013 GALL achieved higher pull-off force measurements than with a competitor’s product. These results demonstrate robust adhesion performance across a wide range of formulations.
The new BYK adhesion promoters are already being used with success in commercial extrusion systems, attesting to their outstanding process stability and their suitability for demanding industrial production processes.
World premiere at Fakuma 2026
The new SCONA products will be celebrating their official trade fair premiere at Fakuma 2026. Everyone interested in learning more can read up on BYK’s trade fair presence in the official exhibitor profile at BYK at FAKUMA.
