What does sustainability mean at BYK?
Sustainability is of high value at BYK and has many facets. We want to be climate neutral as early as 2025. This is an ambitious goal, but by no means everything: the search for alternative raw materials, the reorientation of research and development towards more sustainable products, sustainability in the applications of our customers, and the safest possible recycling in the sense of the circular economy are also among our most important topics.
We integrate the three dimensions of ecology, economy and social commitment into all decision-making processes at BYK.
Unfortunately, we cannot be THE solution to climate change - but we can be part of the solution. With our sustainable solutions, we want to create value - not only for our customers, but also for our environment, our employees and future generations.
With innovative additives, BYK helps to improve the properties and quality of coatings, plastics and industrial applications. We are continuously expanding our portfolio of sustainable additives in all product groups.
For example, we offer bio-based additives, aqueous systems, PTFE-free wax additives and additives for the recycling of thermoplastics. BYK also produces VOC-free, tin-free, aromatic-free, low cyclic siloxanes and biocide-free additives. Our researchers are also continuously developing further sustainable solutions for our customers around the world.
BYK concentrates on aqueous systems as a technology of the future. At BYK laboratories all over the world, our employees develop customer-oriented solutions.
PTFE-free wax additives
The use of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) has been viewed critically at a global level for some time. That is why BYK has developed sustainable alternatives.
Recycling of thermoplastics
Upcycling of used polyolefines or PET - this way, for example, old battery housings, beverage crates or PET bottles can be used to make new ones.
Our DISPERBYK-TF series offers tin-free alternatives to established standard wetting and dispersing additives. The tin-free alternatives meet current industry standards that restrict the use of organotin compounds. They offer comparable product performance to standard additives.
BYK is continuously expanding its portfolio of aromatic-free additives in the various product groups. These include defoamers and air release additives, wetting and dispersing additives, rheology additives, surface additives and wax additives.
Low cyclic silicone surface additives
BYK offers various silicone-based additives that have been purified in an additional production step. They have a residual content of cyclic siloxanes of less than 0.1% - for safe use in any formulation.
From zero to silver: Congratulations to our BYK Additives team in Shanghai (China). BYK Additives Shanghai Co., Ltd. has achieved a silver rating in its first attempt at EcoVadis certification.
Congratulations also to our BYK Additives Ltd. team in Widnes (UK), where the existing gold certification was renewed.
The Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) develops and implements global standards for the production and procurement of sustainable palm oil.
BYK’s CERAFLOUR 1050, CERAFLOUR 1051, and CERAFLOUR 1052 provide comparable performances with a focus on improving abrasion resistance and scratch resistance, at the same time.
Responsible Care® is a global voluntary initiative of the chemical industry to continuously improve environmental, health and safety performance of their operations and products in a manner responsive to the concerns of the public.
On May 31 this year, BYK received the prestigious "Innovation Company of the Year" award in Shanghai in recognition of the company's commitment to differentiated and pioneering solutions. This is the second time that BYK has received this prestigious distinction since 2017.
For many years now, sustainability has been a key driver for BYK in its development of new additives. In addition to the obvious properties and effects of the product, questions regarding environmental impact, chemical basis, and energy consumption play a central role.
Associative thickeners are typically offered as aqueous solutions and require the addition of a number of raw materials, including biocides that prevent microbial contamination. The case is different with solid associative thickeners which usually come in powder form.
Congratulations to our BYK colleagues at the Denekamp, Deventer and Nijverdal sites: They were able to renew their EcoVadis certification and thus continue to carry the gold label!
The next success story in terms of sustainability: BYK USA Inc. receives EcoVadis Gold status! BYK USA is the fourth BYK company to receive EcoVadis Gold status - following BYK Additives Ltd. (UK), BYK Netherlands B.V. (Netherlands) and BYK-Chemie GmbH (Germany). BYK USA Inc. is thus among the top 5 percent of companies certified by EcoVadis. We are proud!
How would it be, for example, if in the course of the energy transition the rotor blades of wind turbines were significantly lighter and more stable, making the wind turbine more efficient?
We start our anniversary year with a success story in terms of sustainability. Our BYK production site in Shanghai has been equipped with a solar plant covering around 2,000 square meters.
Sustainability is an important aspect in the development of new products. In addition to the product’s direct properties and effects, questions regarding environmental impact, chemical basis, and energy consumption often play a significant role too.
