BYK presents the art of adhesive bonding

BYK not only supports students interested in STEM, but also promotes advanced training for chemistry teachers at high schools. Together with the German Chemical Industry Association VCI, the German Adhesives Association IVK has drawn up and provided teaching material on adhesive bonding and adhesives for school chemistry and applied science classes. This teaching material has been refined continuously over the years under the technical supervision of skilled chemistry teachers.

This team of educationalists also includes Professor Hans-Joachim Bader of Goethe University Frankfurt, who, backed by the IVK, hosted in mid-November at BYK a field-based teachers’ seminar, the first of its kind in this form, implemented by the Chemical Industry Fund and the North Rhine-Westphalia State VCI. This field-based seminar for inspirational chemistry classes was made possible by BYK’s Adhesives & Sealants end use team headed by Tobias Austermann and Laboratory Manager Verena Boeckmann.

The attending teachers were given an insight into the current trends in the research and industrial fields of adhesives, were presented with a technical overview of selected chemical aspects of adhesive bonding and adhesives, and learned about student and teacher demonstrations of adhesive experiments which they could conduct themselves in the BYK laboratories in Wesel.

BYK is one of the world’s leading suppliers in the field of additives and measuring instruments. Additives are chemical substances which, when used in small quantities, improve product properties such as scratch resistance or surface gloss. Manufacturing processes are also optimized by the addition of additives.

The coatings, inks, and plastics industries are among the main consumers of BYK additives. Yet with the production of oil and gas, the manufacture of care products, the production of adhesives and sealants, and construction chemistry, too, BYK additives improve the product characteristics and production processes. Testing and measuring instruments from BYK can effectively evaluate the quality of color, gloss, and appearance as well as the physical properties of paint, plastic, and paper products and are an important part of quality control.

As a globally operating specialty chemicals company, BYK has production sites in Germany (Wesel, Kempen, Moosburg, Schkopau and Geretsried), in the Netherlands (Deventer, Njiverdal and Denekamp), in Great Britain (Widnes), in the US (Wallingford, Chester, Gonzales, Louisville, Earth City and Pompano Beach) and in China (Tongling).

Today the company employs more than 2,300 people worldwide and forms part of the ALTANA Group.
