What are powder coatings made of?

Solid resin granules, pigment, filler, additives and other functional components in general, just solid and dry components.

How are powder coatings produced?

Premixing of all solid components in a high-speed mixer. The main dispersing process is done in an extruder at high temperatures (approx. 100 – 120 °C). After extrusion the molten material is fed onto cooling belt to cool it down. Afterwards grinding with high mechanical forces in a suitable mill. Final sieving and classification of particles size distribution. The packaging is usually a carton box with a polyethylene bag inside.

Which materials can be powder-coated and how are powder coatings applied?

It´s a quite unique application technic, but comparable to electrostatically sprayed liquid coatings. Powder is fluidized by inserting pressured air, transported with behavior like liquid and applied by electrostatically spray to a conductive substrate. Therefore, metals are the most important substrates to be powder coated. Typical application examples are all kind of metal furniture, appliances, facade elements, agricultural machineries, automotive parts or bicycle frames. Nowadays also glass, ceramics, wood, MDF and plastics getting more important due to lower curing temperatures of powder coatings systems.

BYK offers a wide range of additives for powder coatings to improve leveling and prevent craters, to improve processing conditions and to enhance the general performance profile. A special range of additives is used to provide structure or texture effects, to reduce gloss levels and to improve adhesion properties on various substrates. BYK also provides the right additives for clear powder coatings. Additives from BYK are a must for any powder coating to ensure a high level of quality expectations.
